Webhost Problems
« on: November 03, 2005, 10:27:42 AM »
I've decided to roll the DB forward again. So we have most of the new posts since October 22nd.

Again, not sure why it was rolled back, but it should be all OK now.

As for people's subdomain sites, I apologize, there's nothing we can really do about it. All you can do is try to email Punboy and get him to recreate your account.

NOTE: as far as I know, little or no data has been lost.

its rather strange. My forum has not gone offline or had any problems that I did not create. Yet its sub hosted by Xfir.
I heard something about his site being moved to a new server. Could mine have started out on the new server?

Well, thanks for rolling the DB forward again. I was starting to despair over all my lost posts.  :'(

But, they all seem to be back, so I'm happy.  (thumbsup)

Find your hosts file (mostly C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS) and add this line to the bottom of it.

See, the only reason I havn't e-mailed Punboy about it is because all of my webspaces were, as far as I was aware, hosted under the OPU webspace as a subdomain. So I'm unsure why they're still not available or why they even disappeared in the first place.

EVERY single (sub)domain has to be configure in Apache.
And since we do not have access to punboy's apache config file(s) we cannot reset subdomains,  I, myself have even requested that he just add my domain (eddy-b.com) to the config, and no need to restore my files - i'll just upload them again -- no response!
it's just sick.. and sad... ;(

Windows ME is a f***ed up operating system. In fact, Microsoft even said they f***ed up. Essentially it was a failed attempt to merge Windows '98 and Windows NT as a response to the Linux phenomena (had MS running scared for awhile).

Anyway, the point is this: Me is a very much crippled OS. It's memory management is flawed, compatibility is nill and much of the under-the-hood code is broken. Not suprisingly, Windows '98 is technically a better OS. MS suggests to all users of Me to either use Windows '98 or to upgrade to Win2K/XP. I think they've even stopped supporting ME for that very reason.

=====================================================

It's becoming clear to me that Punboy and his hencmen over there are being very lazy. If they have the freaking list of webspaces, how hard could it POSSIBLY be to ADD AN ENTRY INTO A CONFIG FILE??? If I could I would personally yell and scream and b**** but I can't because a) I don't think it's my place and B) I don't have the contact info.

So go figure. I would REALLY like to release the new OPUTool, for instance, but I can't because I can't test some of its functionality!

Well, maybe. But the problem is that OPUTool uses FTP services to download/upload information from a server. So if you have FTP services on a server, that would do the trick easily enough.

hmm it wouldn't work then I think. As far as I know I don't have a FTP like how you need it.
my site is hosted by Xfir so I don't think I have it

This doesn't help fix the problem though, if I can't get the fourms to work on my computer, then it will be incredibly hard to finish the survivor maps. The fourms worked before, so why can't we get them to work now?

hm, the hosts file might exist at c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

(it does on XP)

On 9x/Me I think you can create a new file HOSTS with no file extension in the windows dir. If you're making one from scratch also add this line

127.0.0.1 localhost

I'ld go ahead and write off anything in the subs; its quite unlikely punboy will get off his lazy ass and fix it. And chances are, it was a f*** up on the part of punboy or one of his cohorts that's f***ed the subs. *sigh*

Ahem. May I remind you that we are currently receiving free web hosting from him. Think of all that uptime we've received for free. Plus all the expansion we've been doing, and hosting stuff for so many members without any thought for what it might be costing Punboy.

Granted, recent events have been a little unfortunate, and the time it's taking to correct them is a little dissapointing, but I still find it a little surprising how fast all the good things are forgotten.

So yes, I can understand some frustration with the current state of things, but unless you're willing to shell out the money for hosting, I'd think a little more respect is in order here.

"quality always comes at a price"
that rule implies that "NO quality" would come for free... hence our GREAT quality hosting :P

You want good quality: you get paid hosting
You want the best quality: you get expensive hosting..

Yes, I've been working diligently on the server lately and we hope to move all our sites over once all the kinks are worked out.

However, do read the note there. Our plans of operation are probably going to change at some point, because we have a lot less space and bandwidth. This means we probably won't be able to offer as much space to our members.

Also, large files like videos will have to be distributed using BitTorrent.
