Game Pickup System
« on: June 01, 2005, 08:25:02 PM »
Even though I'm noone important like ^ ya'll, I'd like to note that noone uses the pickup system. And I feel that It should be put into use more often, for creating large (greater than 1v1) games. It would cut down on the:

<thablkpanda> Ya i'm coming to game
<xxhostinthagamexx> ok it's at (ip)
<thablkpanda> coming
<xxhostinthagamexx>it's up
<thablkpanda> ANYONE WANNA PLAY WITH HOSTIN AND ME? JOIN (ip)
<xxhostinthagamexx> panda you coming?
<xxhostinthagamexx> PANDA??
<xxhostinthagamexx> WOO HOO??
Etc. etc.

As you can see (if not, you need glasses see -> www.eyeglasses.com) this would seriously pollute the channel if people were actually conversating about a topic of importance, for example, the governmental strategic helium reserve, which could shape our lives for the next - minute or so.

All in favor of forcing use of the pickup system and hunting all members that do not use such system? Say ' YO YO WASSUP?? '

If it's not OP2 discussion! It is not important! The governmental strategic helium reserve will have to move to lobby if it gets in the way of OP2 discussion!

Besides it's much more fun just yelling "Anyone else coming!?!?"

the idea of the pickup system is so people dont have to look at irc to be able to play, they can join a game, minimise irc and wait till it is ready.

My point still stands that the system is not used, period. I first joined OPU and created games and stuff via the system, and expected people to join up in no time. But Noone did. Eventually I got smart and figured out that ya'll ask for games instead of using the system. I'm just sayin'. No need to get abusive :)

Part of it also might be that not a lot of people even know of the system's existance.

If the system is really gonna be effective in any way, you need to shorten the topic, so that you can see it at the top of window, instead of having to scroll up and down, to find out if a game is about to start.

This is atleast a problem when using mirc!!!

I concur with hacker, and slovi.. HEY! We all agree!

I'd just like to see the pickup system used. It's a great idea, and It's a shame to have to see it go to waste :(

The Annoying game thing that only has 4 spots avalible in it.  Its some what useless if you ask me.  Unless it can be tied to some script that every one would have and launch the person that host first then waits like 30 secs then launchs every one else once in the game you pick your s*** and map and run.  Untill it does some thing like that it creates nothing more then spam.

Yeah, I actually find that pickup system really spammy. It used to annoy me when people used it. Especially when they were using it for the first time and trying out all the options. I guess it wouldn't have bothered me so much if it was actually used to start games, but usually nobody joined and the person quit the channel before a game was started.

The only spam should be the topic changing because they can do the commands in a /msg to the Bot. Maybe we could use it for WD games? I realy wanna get people playing WD!

Well admins can change the game size via the Bot, but maybe we could change it so it was easyer to change the game size.

The reason its set as 4 as default because smaller games are more common then large ones.

I was thinking, the bigest advantage of the pickup system is that you dont have to watch irc at all if you want to play, you just wait to be messaged by the bot (and if ur using NNS you get a baloon popup) and then you join the game.

The system could be changed so the bot messages you everytime some one joins the game, so when someone is joining, its not like joining for the next game but saying that they want to play. So other players who currently want to play, and have told the bot that they want to play will be messaged by the bot that someone else wants to play. You wouldnt need a gamesize to be set, just !add and if someone else is waiting to play, there be told and one of you can host, and your playing.

I think if it was like this, it would actualy be used.

the only comment i can figure out it this one :
Seven sixteenths of one inch:

That's the distance you'd have to move your pinky in order to not sound like an idiot.

i hate people who keep writing in capital letter and it is not by mistake so basicly im for the anti-spam system

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. Aces high.

In response to Lev's post:

Would that mean, you wouldn't show people's names in the topic? just a way of notifying people that others want to play?

or still keep the "Next game" in the topic?

Have a list of current people who want to play on the bot.

First person joins the list because they want to play, they minmise irc and get on with what evea.

Second person joins the list because they wanna play and the bot messages the first person saying that they have joined the list, the person gets a popup baloon (with nns) and looks at irc and hopefully plays with that person. The second person who just joined could also be told the current list of people wanting to play via notice.

Sounds pretty good.

Topic idea could be text like
"People Waiting to Play: X" where X is a number

Then they can use a list command to get the player list, etc.

The only problem is: if the person goes afk / away from irc but doesn't remove themselves.. there's no real good way to automatically detect that, it's up to the user to remove themselves if they dont want to play.

*maybe* a bot system where it detects certain words they say like
"I dont want to play anymore" and auto removes them, etc

this is one step toward a more effective way to play

Running, scrambling, flying
Rolling, turning, diving, going in again
Run, live to fly, fly to live, do or die
Run, live to fly, fly to live. Aces high.
