Title: Savant Warnings
Post by: Sirbomber on January 22, 2010, 10:05:57 AM
I think it's a fairly simple poll.  Which of those Savant warning messages makes you panic most?  Feel free to tell us how you voted and why.

I picked "Our colony is under attack!" because it usually means somebody found an undefended entrance and is going to have their way with my base before I have a chance to respond.  Assuming they didn't go straight for my CC...

Blight by far!  I can defend fairly well against attacks, volcanic eruptions, starving, and missles.  People are dying is more of a "WTF?!" reaction for me...and enemy unit sighted...I don't even hear it when it's said anymore.  Whenever the blight pops up on the map, by first thought is "OH s***!" because there is nothing I can do to delay it.  Blight walls don't work unless you made them hella thick, and thereby doomed yourself anyway becuase of wasted resources.

I just got a map idea...

Haven't really played any missions with blight yet (read: any mission beyond the first few). I always forget - or, neglect - to research volcanic walls, so they suck the most for me.

For me its people starving.

Approaching blight is also quite shocking, but there is still a slight chance of getting all mission objectives done, before it actually arrives in my base. People starving usually means instant death.

TH, as long as you respond by building an agridome right away, it shouldn't be instant death...

That takes too much time CK. Even in multiplayer.

Only thing you can do really is to idle all structures to keep Agridomes online and let your population drop to a level where your Agridomes can support it. - And pray all your scientists won't die in the starvation.

it was close between blight and people starving for me.

i choose blight.

why? it makes me rush faster and its in the middle of a game and makes it the most tense situation the game has to offer cuzz your racing against the clock.

plus its mocking me in a purplish way :P

I added my vote to the Blight..

I don't play single player that much, and most of the other messages i've gotten used to through multiplayer. - Thus, when the blight is approaching I really jump (sometimes)

I would have voted for "Power levels marginal" because you are close to a power shortage and it could hurt your morale if buildings get disabled.

End sarcasm.

I voted for Our colony is under attack, because I have a tendency to keep my base lightly guarded (damn starcraft hold over). So if they are in my base I'm probably doomed.

I panic when people start to die

blight is one of the only disasters that... eat everything =P and its almost unstopable, so, if it starts, certainly it will destroy everything you have build and end with all your fun ^^

(Actually, this is the reason why i nerfed blight function in my client... i hate it... makes me sick >.<)

Definately Blight.

Whenever I hear "The Blight is approaching" I realise that I forgot to do a critical mission objective like build 3 tigers... and I only have 1 and here comes the blight!

Or mostly, I'm prepared for the blight but I try to outrun the blight to get a couple more seconds out of the level (birthing colonists etcs) and realise a little too late that an earthquake is about to occur where I parked all my units!

And yes most of the others I can deal with. Its like trying to avoid becoming a zombie in a zombie apocaplyse. You know for pretty darn sure that A) you will starve to death or B) you will become a zombie. Same with the Blight!.. you either A) will escape or B) you are screwed!

Edit by CK: fixed it for ya so that it shows it how you want it, see my post below to learn how to do this

the B) are supposed to be B ) but with the bracket right next to the B!

When you have a post where you're going to be using a b lists, and you don't plan on using smilies, use the full reply form instead of the fast reply.  Below the text box, there is an option to enable/disable emotions (disable by unchecking the box) in your post.  Hope that helps you out in future posts :)

lol, zombie apoc.  Learn to use a bow, it's easier to learn how to make a functioning arrow than how to make a functioning bullet :P

but yea, blight is really the only thing that that really is a death sentance.

Microbe Walls guys.
Title: Savant Warnings
Post by: CK9 on March 09, 2010, 10:02:48 AM
microbe walls = useless.

Can't remember which eden mission it is, but on one I built up a 10-tile thick microbe wal around the starting point of the blight.  It spawned in the daylight and I got maybe 20 marks before it had eaten through the wall.

edit: comparison time

On plym 5 (first time you encounter a growing blight on a plym map) it is possible on all difficulties to build a lava wall that actually stops the lava from being able to spread further.  That just shows me that eden is producing utter junk in the way of defensive products.

You got it backwards.  Lava Walls are useless.  Microbe Walls are nearly indestructible if done properly.

Unless I'm on easy, I'm usually too busy blowing up/getting blown up and trying to keep enough ore to actually bloody finish the mission to send out a dozen workers to build a wall. I just suck it up and finish the mission. The Blight just tells me I've been playing too long. :)

You mean you don't wall off the passes to prevent attacks? :P

bomber, I have never once seen an effective blight wall that didn't obliterate rare ore stockpiles.

Yes, I'd like to see this "properly constructed" microbe wall.

It's simple: every tile not having a building on it + every tile that does not constitute a mining route must house a blight wall tile - enough space for your extra units (on the opposite side of the blights source)

Definately the blight is approaching. Everything else you can do something about, but the blight you're totally screwed regardless. The blight wall is not particularly helpful in the long run.

"The blight is approaching" makes me rush to finish all the objectives.

"Our people are dying" is humorous.

Perhaps microwave units should be able to hold back the blight by shooting at it. They project a huge pulse of thermal energy. Blight is vulnerable to heat as it cannot cross lava. Even fill up your microbe walls with molten lava/iron.

Post by: Hidiot on September 27, 2011, 03:48:09 PM
The blight can move underground. Technically, lava can only delay its spread a little while, but eventually the blight could surface on the other side by spreading underground.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

(And no, I don't count this as necroing, since the topic's relevance is restated with every new member.)

Along with all the other very very broken aspects of that game, I'm sure it was originally designed with a purpose, but as it was rushed into release, it was never implemented, resulting in yet another useless button.

While I do agree with the microbe wall arguments wrt the ineffectiveness and the expense (hence I've only ever built one, and loaded back so it disappeared from the history of the world), what really makes "The Blight is approaching" make my heart skip a beat is that is the only thing Cirrus ever says where she sounds freaked out.  It's all in the tone.

For me, the blight is approaching. If the savant says that, I was being too lax.
