Just wondered what ppl thought.
Is .map fine or could we think of something better?
If we are gonna change it, it should still be 3 chars.
-
You should at least provide options that you think are better, when posting such poll. And still, everyone has a different opinion of whats good.
I'm not gonna vote against ".map" in order to possibly get ".crap".
So, better leave it as is. ".map" is after all fine and describes the contents of the file very well.
-
theres no reason to change it. the only tools that can read .map are made by us so it doesnt really matter anyway. besides, its pretty obvious what a .map file is for. changing it to something else would only make map files harder to identify.
-
I vote no, unless you made it something like o2m (op2 map file).
-
it can be changed to any 3 char ext.
i also thought of .o2m :)
-
I think .map is probably fine as it is. Like said before it describes the file's contents well enough.
Even if we were to change it, we could only do it on maps created from now on otherwise we create big compatibility issues (and more complaints. Sort of like changing on6_01.map -> opu_05.map or whatever, but the consequences would be even greater).
No problem with doing it on new maps. But then you have a uniformity issue (if you're a purist :P). Also some tools might need to be changed to have *.o2m or whatever files listed in open and save dialogs (otherwise the user has to manually input the filename, or set it to All Files)
-
.o2m sounds like a music file! Leave it as .map no need to change what is not broken!
-
i agree
-
This falls under Moogle's 3rd law of life.
If it isn't broke fix it untill it is ^_^
in this case lets not fix it.
-
what exactly is the advantage of changing the file name? Is it just to get a cooler name for it, or does it actually give any advantages???
-
Changing it is
dumb .. - no, it's utterly stupid
Plain and simple. It will NOT ONLY cause problems with renaming the mapname within missions you do think about, but also the ones you DON'T think about: like other DLL's written by one of the coders, that use standard maps. They will not run anymore when the map names change.
I vote: this thread should be closed and deleted.
-
changeing the file name dosent change any thing and give any advantages like u asked.
changing the name to somthing else is the only advantage.
just wondered what ppl thought about it.
well the vote has decided that its not gonna be changed and thats wut i expected.
-
yes, changing it is a bad idea. remeber the original name change to the opu*.map names, which caused a bit of confusion.(and is going to be reverted at reunion i think)
it would also screw over a lot of existing dlls and source...so yeah like eddy-b says utterly stupid.
